1.1.1Transmission

This lexeme is found in the poetical inscription engraved on the lion sarcophagus of Antiphellos dated on stylistic grounds to the beginning of the 4th century BCE (Zahle 1979a:318, Mühlbauer 2007a:91).

Shevoroshkin 1969a:264 determined the word boundary kuli=ke, which is followed by Neumann 2007a:175 and Melchert (DLL:118). Outdated Gehrisch 2018a:107.

1.1.4Meaning

In its context, the word kuli is connected to xbade ‘river-valley’ by the particles =ke and sebe ‘both… and…’ and both nouns are here interpreted as locatives. Since xbade denotes a landscape, the meaning of kuli should also be found in the geographical domain. The etymological connection to Hitt. A.ŠÀkulei- ‘wasteland’, suggested here, fits the bill both formally and semantically:

[z?]ata ãpiti[ a]tli lijanuwa kuli=ke mruwa{:}si tidñta xbade sebe purese mñnusama lajata

‘He imposes(?) for [hi]mself the fertile lajata as nymphaean payments(?) both in the wasteland for the mruwasa-deity and in the purese river-valleys.

For a discussion of the semantics of the predicate see ãpi-(ti). Shevoroshkin 2014a:246f. translates kuli as ‘patrol’ based on an etymological connection with the Luwian root kuwal- ‘to turn’. Although the etymological connection may be correct, the semantics assigned are contextually inadequate. In a later attempt, Shevoroshkin (apud Neumann 2007a:175) suggests instead the meaning ‘calm’ based on an etymological connection with Hitt. kuwaliu- ‘calm, still’. Schürr 2005a:141 connects kuli to the PN Κολις and Κaλιμαρος, which does contribute anything to the semantics.

2. Reconstruction

2.1Reconstruction

For Hittite kulei- n., Oettinger 1995a:214f. (and Oettinger 2004b:131f.) reconstructs *kl-éi̯-h2 > *kl-ḗi̯ > *kulḗi̯, which consists of the hysterokinetic suffix *-i- in the collective *-éi̯- and the root *kel-. He assumes a semantic development from ‘to turn’ to ‘to walk around caringly’ to ‘cultivate’. We add Lyc. B kuli ‘wasteland (?)’, which fits the current reconstruction of the cognate. See the root PAnat. *kel-.
