1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation
Attested just once, the phonological interpretation of this lexeme is nevertheless reasonably certain, because it is part of the word family around /waralla/i-/ ‘own’, see under lemma, and formed with the suffix /-azza-/, well-known from other lexemes (see also the discussion of the stem below).
[AH.B.]
1.1.4Meaning
Already in his edition of the KULULU lead strips, Hawkins 1987a:144 suggested that the present lemma very likely denotes the status or occupation of the person named in the relevant entry, because it occurs in the slot where this information is expected in KULULU lead strip 1, §22: 50 HORDEUM Iku+ra/i-ti-ia CUM-ni wa/i+ra/i-la-za, approx. /50 HORDEUM Kurtiya anni warallaza/ ‘50 (homers of) barley for Kurti, the serf’. This is contrasted with the designation /arawann(i)-/ ‘freeman’ used in several other entries of the same lead strip, both denoting a social class or rank (Yakubovich 2013b:164).
[AH.B.]
1.1.5Stem
The lexeme is based on the adjective /waralla/i-/ ‘own’ and constitutes an agent noun formation in /-azza-/ (Sasseville 2014-2015a:108). An alternative, though less likely analysis has been put forward by Yakubovich 2013b:164, who regards it as a later individualisation of a superlative.
