/warall(a)i-(di)/, wa/i+ra/i-li-

1.1.2Forms

3sg. pret. ind. act. /warallida/ wa/i+ra/i-li-tà TELL AHMAR 6, §18 (Tell Ahmar)

The spelling of the attestation in TELL AHMAR 6, §18 is 〈wa/i+ra/i-li-tà〉 against the misprint of the ending as 〈ta〉 in the editio princeps in Hawkins 2006a:14.

1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation

As a member of the word family around /waralla/i-/ ‘own’, the present verb has a reasonably secure phonological interpretation. The ending should be assumed to be /-di/, because it is spelt with 〈tà〉 instead of any of the other TA signs, cf. Rieken 2008b:639.

1.1.4Meaning

Derived from the adjective /waralla/i-/ ‘own’, the general meaning of this verb is clear (see already Hawkins 2006a:26), although further finds may help to make it more precise. In the only context it is attested in (TELL AHMAR 6, §18), /warall(a)i-(di)/ denotes an action performed by the storm-god: *a-wa/i-ma-sa LITUUS+na-hi-i-tà (VIA)hu-sa-la-hi-tà-ha wa/i+ra/i-li-tà, i.e. /a=wa=m(u)=as manahidi husallahidi=ha warallida/ ‘He (scil. Tarhunza of the Army) made me his own in vision and swiftness?’, and the author goes on to relate subsequent success in warfare.

[AH.B.]

1.1.5Stem

The use of 〈tà〉 for the ending indicates that the verb features lenited endings, and in all likelihood the lexeme belongs to the verbal class in /-(a)i-(di)/. Alternatively, it may belong to the class in /-i(ya)-(di)/ instead, but only further evidence from other slots in the paradigm can verify that. The verb is built from the adjective /waralla/i-/ ‘own’ with the suffix /-i-/, cf. Hawkins 2006a:26.
