1.1.4Meaning
The adjective kuliwališ modifies kuwaniš ‘woman, lady’, which stands in apposition to the name of the goddess Kataḫzip/wuri-. It is derived with the suffix -wa- and -ali- together, which finds a comparable Luwian derivational chain; cf. Rieken & Sasseville 2014a:306-310. This derivational chain is often, but not always individualizing. In this case, the individualization would be appropriate, since it refers to a woman. The Anatolian suffix -wa- is not known for its deverbal derivations, thus a noun *kuli- could be assumed instead as the derivational base (cf. Hitt. karpi- → karpiwāla- ‘furious’): *kuli- + -wa- ‘equating the kuli-’ + -ali- ‘the one equating the kuli-’; cf. Rieken & Sasseville loc. cit.
From an etymological perspective, one can compare Hitt. kula- c. (golden necklace with jewels) probably derived from the root kwal- ‘to turn’ attested mainly in the Luwic languages and suggests an adjective referring to the pendants worn by the goddess. Tischler (HEG A-K:624) associates Pal. kuliwališ tentatively to Hitt. ku(wa)liu- ‘flowing slowly’ without further information. No semantic assignment is offered in Carruba 1970a:61.
No semantic assignment can be properly argued and therefore, the meaning of the word must remain unknown.
