1.1.3Meaning ‘to turn (?)’
The meaning of this verb is generally assumed to be ‘to turn’ (Starke 1990a:236f.; CLL:114; HED K:236, 238; Tischler 2008a:97, Tischler 2016a:184; Ünal 2016a:962), which is, however, based exclusively on a homonymous verb in Hittite transmission (Starke 1990a:237 n. 810, see s.v.), since the Luwian passages are too fragmentary to define the meaning of this verb.

1.2.2Forms
| 3sg. pres. | ku-wa-li-i-ti | KUB 17.12 ii 25 | (CTH 431, NS) |
The attestation follows CLL:114 (cf. also Laroche 1959a:59; Starke 1990a:236 n. 809; HED K:236), checked against the photo of the Mainzer Fotoarchiv. Contra Melchert and Starke, its participial forms are not attested yet, since those forms belong to another word, see s.v. kulaimi-.

1.2.3Meaning ‘to turn’
Despite the early research (its meaning is unknown according to Laroche 1959a:59 and HEG A-K:626), there is now a general agreement regarding the meaning (Starke 1990a:236f. with n. 810; CLL:114; HED K:236; Del Monte 2004a:343, 345; Tischler 2008a:97, Tischler 2016a:184; Goedegebuure 2014a:146; Görke 2015b), due to Starke’s observation that the context requires the turning of the bread (Starke 1990a:237 n. 810).

1.2.4Origin
There is a well substantiated general agreement that this is a Luwian foreign word in Hittite (HEG A-K:626; HED K:236; van den Hout 2007a:249; Tischler 2008a:97, Tischler 2016a:184 [alternatively Hittite with question mark]; presumably this was meant by “kuwali(ya)-” ‘to turn’ by Melchert 2005a:452) due to its Luwian ending.
