1.1.4Meaning
The meaning assignment follows Starke 1990a:335 and Melchert (CLL:278) and is based entirely on the analysis of the stem formation (see under Stem). HEG W-Z:661 and Pecchioli Daddi 1982a:269 do not offer any translation.
[E.R.]
1.1.5Stem
Following Starke 1990a:335 and Melchert (CLL:278), LÚzappalalla/i- is derived with the adjectival suffix -alla/i- from *zappal-. In contrast to the instrument noun GIŠzappalālla (see under Lemma), the common gender stem is substantivized as an agent noun.
[E.R.]
1.1.6Origin
It is the parallel stem formation of CLuw. GIŠzappalālla and LÚzappalalla/i- in Hittite transmission that points to a Luwian origin.
[E.R.]
For the lemma head see CLuw. *zapp-.
