ẽtamνi-

‘to decree’

1.1.1Transmission

The two attestations of this verb come from mutually interconnected legal texts found in the precinct of Artemis in Sardis and datable to the 5th or 4th century BC, with a preference for the earlier date.

1.1.2Forms

1sg. pret. act. fẽtamνidν LW 23.18 (Sardis)
    LW 24.6 (Sardis)

The stem ẽtamνi- is combined with the prefix fa- in both its attestations.

1.1.3Meaning

The derivation of ẽtamνi- from the base noun ẽtam(i)- was recognized already in Brandenstein 1931b:24f. Therefore, once the meaning of ẽtam(i)- was defined as ‘regulation, ordinance’, this immediately elucidated the semantics of the denominative verb, see Heubeck 1959a:66f. and Vetter 1959a:44. Note that ẽtam(i)- and its derivative ẽtamνidν occur in the neighboring lines of LW 23. A quasi-synonym of ẽtamνidν is apparently ẽtamν unadν (cf. una- ‘to let know’).

1.1.4Stem

The derivation of ẽtamνi- from ẽtam(i)- is parallel to the derivation of padafuni- from padafu-, as per Carruba 1960a:42. The same denominative suffix is also present in Luwian, e.g. ḫīrutani(ya)- ‘to curse’. The accent of the derived verb apparently falls on the initial vowel, as is the case of the base noun. For a different interpretation of the morphology see Sasseville 2017a:139.

[I.Y.]

For the derivational base see Lyd. ẽtam(i)-.
