1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation

The phonological interpretation of the form is reasonably certain, because the spelling involves the logogram (*26), which ties the present word securely to the family around HLuw. /hant(a)-/ ‘face’. Partially visible in the spelling, the suffix /-ahid-/ is well-known from other HLuw. words and its assumed shape therefore secure.

1.1.4Meaning

The meaning proposed for the present lexeme is based first and foremost on its morphology, as it is built from the noun /hant(a)-/ ‘face’ and the abstract suffix /-ahid-/ (cf. Hawkins 1979a:159 n. 45 and n. 49). This is borne out by the attestations in their contexts, where /hantahid-/ is used as an attribute to people of power. Cf. e.g. KARKAMIŠ A15b, §13 with wa/i-ta REX-tá-za “FRONS”-hi-ti ARMA-na kwa/i-ti (MANUS.ARMA)su-hi-i-ti-ha, i.e. /wa=tta hantawattanza hantahidi warpin kwadi suhidiha/, recently re-translated as ‘(I exalted Kamani as successor), when I armed him for pre-eminence over kings’ (Yakubovich 2019a:551).

1.1.5Stem

Derived from the noun /hant(a)-/ ‘face’, this lexeme is an abstract formation in /-ahid-/. Although the relevant case forms are not attested, the present lemma can be taken as a neuter noun, because formations in /-ahid-/ are neuters, see e.g. Yakubovich 2015b:6.2.
