/hantili/, FRONS-la/i/u

‘most’

1.1.1Transmission

This adverb is attested twice in the Iron Age HLuw. corpus, once in Karkamiš, dating to the late 10th or early 9th century BCE., and once in Hama, which dates to the mid-9th century BCE.

1.1.2Forms

indecl. /hantili/ FRONS-la/i/u KARKAMIŠ A11a, §17(Karkamiš)
      HAMA 4, §2 (Hama)

The attestation from HAMA 4, §2 occurs in a clause with several illegible words, but is included in the present lemma rather than the similar looking adjective /hantil(i)-/, because the form appears to be complete as is in a text that does not omit case forms, strongly suggesting an adverbial function for -la/i/u.

[AH.B.]

1.1.3Graphic Features

1.1.3.1Phonological Interpreation

The phonological interpretation can be regarded as secure, because the lexeme is part of the word family around /hant(a)-/ ‘face’, which is mirrored by a number of cognate forms in CLuw., cf. Starke 1990a:129.

[AH.B.]

1.1.4Meaning

The suggested meaning for the present lexeme is based on its transparent link with the adjective /hantil(i)-/ ‘foremost’. In the context in KARKAMIŠ A11a, §17, the usage becomes most clear: *a-wa/i-tà FRONS-la/i/u ARGENTUM.DARE-si-ia *a-sa-tá, i.e. /a=wa=ada hantili ARGENTUM.DARE-siya asta/ ‘They were most costly’, see Hawkins 2000a:98f.

[AH.B.]

1.1.5Stem

The adverb is based on the adjective /hantil(i)-/ ‘foremost’ and constitutes a hypostasis that has taken on an adverbial function.
