1.1.3Meaning ‘(unknown)’
1.2 Sidetic
*kuar
‘(unknown)’1.2.1Transmission
Reconstructed from a hapax personal name attested in a votive inscription from Side (Nollé 2001a:630 dates it to the end of the 4th/beginning of the 3rd c., see there for discussion).
[Zs.S.]
1.2.2Forms
| nom. sg. | kuarxexp̣ |
The attestation follows Pérez Orozco 2008a:127 checked against the photographs in Darga 1967a:Res. 8 (= Neumann 1968a:Taf. I.2) and Zinko & Zinko 2019a:426 Fig. 21.5. The photos show only unintelligible traces of the fifth and seventh letters, their reading as ‹i› (Neumann 1968a:84, Neumann 1978b:874; Pérez Orozco 2008a:127) and as the sign N26 (Pérez Orozco 2008a:127 [‹z› in his transcription, cf. Pérez Orozco 2003a:107] and Nollé 2001a:637 [based on the cast, Neumann 1968a:Taf. II]) do not have any support (on the reading of the line see in general the discussion in Nollé 2001a:637f. with refs.).

1.2.3Graphic Features
Although there is no independent evidence for the reading of the first sign (N23) as ‹k› by Pérez Orozco 2003a:106 instead of the traditional ‹b›, his reading is followed here, since it leads to a well attested onomastic element (as pointed out already by himself) not only in this case but also in a cognate word, unlike the reading ‹b› (according to Schürr 2016b:150 n. 7 its reading is “unklar” and refrains from transcribing it, Rizza 2019a:546 considers Pérez Orozco’s transcription “speculative” and “uncertain”).

1.2.4Meaning ‘(unknown)’
Pérez Orozco 2008a:127 convincingly assumes a compound name with *kuari (assuming a name with an adjective or a title or an object based only on the impression that this name would be too long [Eichner 1988b:45 n. 6 and Nollé 2001a:638] is obviously arbitrary, the inscription perfectly fits the scheme name + patronym + papponym, see Pérez Orozco 2008a:139), but the second member cannot be identified due to the reading problems (he entertains the ideas of -i-esp and -zerp). Due to the existence of the root *kwar- (see s.v. kuarśat), which is the stem of *kwari- (see s.v.) and since the reading of the fifth letter as ‹i› cannot be ascertained, the first member is rather to be interpreted as *kuar.

1.3 Carian
*kwar
‘(unknown)’1.3.1Transmission
Reconstructed from a hapax Carian personal name in a false door-stela from Memphis from the first third of the 5th c. (Kammerzell 1993a:162, 170f.).
[Zs.S.]
1.3.2Forms
| gen. sg. | kwarś | E.Me 31 |
The attestation follows Adiego 2007a:376 checked against the photographs in O. Masson 1978a:Pl.XIV.2. For further alleged attestations proposed by Schürr 2010c:195 see the derivative *kwri.
[Zs.S.]
1.3.3Meaning ‘(unknown)’
The inclusion of this name in this dictionary is not justified by its single attestation but by its attestation in compound names in Luwian and Sidetic (see s.vv. *kuwar- and *kuar, resp.) as well as by its derivatives in Carian and Sidetic (see s.vv. *kwri and kuarśat) all pointing to an underlying real word. The meaning of this word remains, however, unknown due to the lack of evidence.
