1.1.1Transmission

This lexeme is found in the inscription of the inscribed pillar of Xanthos, dated contextually to shortly after the ascension of Artaxerxes II in 405-404 BCE and stylistically to around 400 BCE (Borchhardt & Eichner 1997-1999a:19f.).

1.1.2Forms

dat./loc. pl. ewẽne TL 44d.20 (Xanthos)

Differently, ewẽne could be interpreted as an infinitive of a verb *ewe-(ti) (Shevoroshkin 2014a:244).

1.1.3Graphic Features

The segmentation of ewẽnezusi into ewẽne zusi accepted here has not always been clear; cf. Friedrich 1932a:68, Neumann 2007a:80, Schürr 2018b:68.

1.1.4Meaning

No meaning is offered in DLL:115, Neumann 2007a:80, Schürr 2018b:68. Shevoroshkin 2014a:244 suggests an etymological connection with the root for ‘to drink’, which is found in Hitt. eku-/aku-(mi), Pal. ahu- and Luw. uw-, although the retention of the full grade ew- in Lycian B would be unexpected considering the zero grade in the Luwian cognate. A different approach is to compare Hitt. ewa- n. and its n-extension ewa(n)- ‘grain’. Thus, Lyc. B ewẽ(n)- could mean ‘grain’. However, since the context is still poorly understood, none of these hypotheses can be tested and, therefore, no semantic assignment will be provided here.

1.1.5Stem

Lyc. B ewẽne can be taken as a dative plural of a neuter n-stem, i.e. *ewẽ(n)-, or as a formation in -ẽne/i-, or as an infinitive form of a verb *ewe-(ti). Yakubovich (pers. comm.) suggests instead a clitic chain, i.e. ewẽ=ne, in which ewẽ would equate to Lyc. A =ewẽ and ne would be a negation. Along those lines, the word divider before ewẽne would have to be taken as faulty, which is possible, though no more compelling than the other hypotheses.
