1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation

Interpreting the phonological shape of this word is not trivial, and the suggested form is therefore tentative; an alternative interpretation of the form attested in ASSUR letter f+g, §4 may be /lalaHiliyanzi/. What is likely an original /l/ in two places is slightly obscured by rhotacism resulting in a change of /l/ to /r/ (cf. Melchert 2003b:179f.). Although a connection with CLuw. lalḫiya- ‘journey, campaign’ is tempting on phonological grounds, the very different semantics of the two words suggest otherwise (see the meaning discussion below).

1.1.4Meaning

With only a single attestation, the meaning assigned to this lexeme is tentative. However, it is coordinated with na-hi-zi, /nahhinzi/ ‘fear’, which is likewise a hapax legomenon in HLuw., but easily linked to HLuw. /nahassa-/ ‘to fear’ and Hittite nāḫ/naḫḫ-(i) ‘to fear, become afraid’ (cf. EDHIL:591f.). The context therefore suggests that /lalhiliya-/ denotes something similar, esp. since both nouns are preceded by the logographic determiner COR (*341), which is also found with HLuw. /nahhassa-/ ‘to fear’ and other words concerning perception and emotions. A suitable cognate would hence be the Hittite verb laḫlaḫḫiye/a-(mi) ‘to be excited, be anxious’ (cf. HED L:13f.).

Based on the semantics of the context, a connection with the word family around Luw. /lahhi-/ ‘to travel, campaign’ appears unlikely.

1.1.5Stem

The present lexeme is a common gender noun in /-a-/ and does not undergo i-mutation. It is built on an otherwise unattested stem */lalhili-/, which might feature the reduplicated verb stem */lalh-/, found as laḫlaḫḫ- in Hittite (see HEG L:13f.). The attested noun may either represent a noun in -a- based on an adjective in /-i(ya)-/, or it may constitute an action noun in -a- derived from a verb in /-i-(ti)/, i.e. /-iya-/ c.

1.1.6Origin

For a possible Hittite cognate see under Meaning. Because on the uncertainly of the semantics and of phonological interpretation of the word, no reconstruction will be offered here.
