1.1.3Meaning
The substantive law- could be the base of the verb ši-lawa-(d) ‘to care (vel sim.) (cf. Brandenstein 1931b:33), but the fragmentary state of the inscriptions hinders any semantic interpretation; cf. Gusmani 1964a:160. Meriggi 1935a:86 assigns lawl to the paradigm of the lew- ‘Zeus’ and assumes that the vacillation between -e- and -a- is regular. Since the change to -a- only occurs, when -e- is no longer accented (cf. Melchert 1994a:348, 350), and since the -a- in lawl must be accented, then his lexical assignment must be rejected.

1.1.4Stem
The stem of Lydian law- is not assured. It could be an a-stem, i.e. *lawa-, where the stem vowel is deleted in the derivation of the genitival adjective, cf. qašaa- → qaašl(i)- (Sasseville 2017a:138f.).
