plejere-

‘(unknown)’

1.1.1Transmission

This lexeme is found in the inscription of the inscribed pillar of Xanthos, dated contextually to shortly after the ascension of Artaxerxes II in 405-404 BCE and stylistically to around 400 BCE (Borchhardt & Eichner 1997-1999a:19f.). Schürr 2005a:156 (repeated in Schürr 2018b:75) suggests restoring the personal name [p]ḷejereh in N 314a.5 (instead of ṃejereh as per Neumann 1979a:37), equating it etymologically with Lyc. B plejere-. This is entirely possible, but cannot be proven.

1.1.2Forms

acc. sg. plejerẽ TL 44d.37 (Xanthos)
gen. adj. dat./loc. pl. plejerese TL 44d.15 (Xanthos)

The form plejerẽ could be interpreted as a genitive plural instead; cf. under Meaning. Concerning plejerese, Schürr 2005a:156 suggests a personal name in the genitive singular. While his suggestion works from a morphological point of view, it runs into trouble in the attested context. The noun plejerẽ occurring together with plejerese would have to be taken as the direct object of the verb ‘to give’, rendering a personal name very unlikely.

1.1.3Meaning

The word plejerẽ, which occurs in a ritualistic context, is the direct object of the verb pijeti ‘he gives’. This speaks for some kind of ritual object. Shevoroshkin 2012a:475 translates plejere- with ‘plenty’, adducing the CLuw. palḫa- ‘to make flat, spread out’, which does little to shed light on the context. Although the etymological comparison may still be correct, the exact meaning of plejere- remains obscure and, thus, the connection cannot be sustained. No meaning is suggested in DLL:125 and Neumann 2007a:276.

1.1.4Stem

The substantive plejere- could be a neuter stem or a common gender stem in -e-.
