‘(unknown)’

1.1.1Transmission

This lexeme is found once in the poetical inscription engraved on the lion sarcophagus of Antiphellos, dated on stylistic grounds to the beginning of the 4th century BCE (Zahle 1979a:318, Mühlbauer 2007a:91).

1.1.2Forms

abl./instr. qabalimedi TL 55.3 (Antiphellos)

1.1.3Graphic Features

For the reading qabalimedi instead of **kabalimedi see Schürr 2005a:110f. (followed by DLL:126); cf. Neumann 2007a:158, 296. The reading is likewise supported by our own photo. Gehrisch 2018a:107 still uses the false reading.

1.1.4Meaning

The context in which qabalimedi occurs is obscure. It appears as if three of something have been given for someone’s benefit:

                me=uwe memleje : pri=p̣{:}e trija da{:}te qir:zẽ qabalimedi (TL 55.3)

                ‘For the benefit of Memle (?), they gave three of the qirzẽ with qabalimedi.’

Schürr 2005a:148 suggests an etymological link to the Lyc. A word qebelija, which modifies cattle. This is entirely plausible, but since the meaning of qebelija remains obscure, no semantic assignment for the Lycian B cognate can be given. Shevoroshkin 2012a:467 suggests the meaning ‘(sacrificial) animal’ by comparing likewise Lyc. A qebelija, which is not convincing, because qebelija certainly does not mean ‘animal’.

1.1.5Stem

Formally, qabalimedi can be analyzed as a participial formation in -ime/i- belonging to a non-attested verbal stem *qabali-(ti). Since there is no word agreeing with qabalimedi in the sentence, it could have been substantivized; cf. Lyc. B kuprime-.
