1.1.4Meaning
The sequence wāšunikeš ilaš is an epithet of the deities dIlaliyanteš, called dIlaliyantigeš in Palaic. Melchert 1984b:41 analyzes the noun ila- as a cognate of the verb *ilaliya- found in Hittite ilaliya-(mi) ‘to desire’ and translates it as ‘passion’. The substantive ila- c. appears also in Hittite, where it designates some undesirable quality that resides in the heart (cf. HW 2nd ed. I:36f.). Since the sentiments of ‘passion, desire’ can be both positive and negative, it is possible to reconcile the Hittite and Palaic cognates. Thus, the deities of passion, i.e. dIlaliyant-, are called wāšunikeš ilaš ‘beneficent passions’. Outdated Kammenhuber 1959a:61, Carruba 1970a:57.

2. Reconstruction
2.1Reconstruction ‘passion’
Based on Hitt. ilā- and Pal. ila- c. ‘passion’ (Melchert 1984b:41), it is possible to reconstruct a Proto-Anatolian substantive *ilo- c. or *ilaH- c. (a root vowel *e, i.e. *el-, which becomes -i- in Hittite and Palaic when unaccented, is also possible, although if Luwian were to show the root *il-, then a reconstruction with *ĕ vocalism would no longer be possible, only *ē). What appears to be a reduplicated formation can be found in derivatives such as Hitt. ilāliye/a-(mi) ‘to desire’ (HEG I-K:354), the deities dilāliyant- c. and the tentative Palaic derivative ilāliya-x-. However, an analysis as a nominal suffix chain seems equally likely, so that the verb ilāliye/a-(mi) could be a denominative verb in -iye/a-(mi) derived from a non-attested base *ilal- (< *il-ó-lo-).
