šawls
‘(unknown)’1.1.1Transmission
This word is found on a marble stele, which cannot be dated accurately, although Gusmani 1975b:12 assigns it on paleographic grounds to the 4th century BCE (followed by Dusinberre 2003a:234).

1.1.2Forms
| unknown | šawls | LW 80.4 (Sardis) |
Gusmani 1980a:88 suggests a nominative singular of a stem in -la-, which would have undergone syncope, whereas Dusinberre 2003a:234 interprets šawls falsely as a verbal form; cf. under Meaning.

1.1.3Graphic Features
Melchert 2001e lists šawls incorrectly as †šawlš (sawls with the previous conventions).

1.1.4Meaning
Gusmani 1975b:17 connects šawls etymologically to šawẽnt ‘to see, experience’, which he previously translated as ‘to prosper’ and suggests for šawls the meaning ‘Germ. wohlwollend’. His interpretation as an agent noun in -la-, i.e. *šawla-, which would have undergone syncope of the stem vowel -a-, is however unparalleled. Following the etymological connection of Gusmani, Dusinberre 2003a:234 translates šawls as verbal form meaning ‘to prosper’, even though there is no verbal ending in **-ls. Based on the current knowledge of the Anatolian root reflected in Lyd. šaw-, Hitt. šākw- and CLuw. dāw-, one may cautiously assume that Lyd. šawls has something to do with perception. Unfortunately, the fragmentary sate of the sentence offers little help for the grammatical interpretation of the word; cf. pλ=k=in ãn šawls dẽt[…]. If šawls is indeed a nominative singular reflecting a syncopated form *šawlas, as suggested by Gusmani, it would represent a person who performs a certain action on the mobile wealth for someone (pλ). However, this suggestion is quite bold and cannot be sustained by independent evidence. A different approach would be to regard the final consonant as the emphatic particle =s, i.e. šawl=s. In this case, it could be interpreted as a genitival adjective in the nominative plural or nominative/accusative collective. Pending the discovery of further evidence, no grammatical or semantic assignment will be given.
