1.1.2Forms

dat./loc. sg.? /za(n)tal(l)i/ za-CRUS+RA/I CEKKE inscr. 2, §8 (Karkamiš)

In CEKKE inscr. 2, §8, the form is followed by a short string of clitics /=ba=wa/, which may obscure its true case ending. Still, the following adverb renders its analysis as a dat./loc. the most likely option.

The tentative link suggested by Hawkins 2000a:148 to a form in TOPADA, §26 has since been voided, because the division of words in that clause has undergone reanalysis from 〈FINES+HI za/i-CRUS+RA/I〉 to 〈FINES+HI-za/i CRUS+RA/I〉.

1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation

The phonological interpretation of this word is anything but certain, and the form /za(n)tal(l)i/, as suggested above for 〈za-CRUS+RA/I〉 in CEKKE inscr. 2, §8, is merely a suggestion. Following the reading by Hawkins 2000a:145, the single attestation of this word likely features a rebus spelling, in which the sign *86, usually read , stands for /ta/. Attached to it is the thorn-shaped 〈ra/i〉 (*383), here interpreted as the rhotacised cover symbol used to represent the remainder of the stem. The attested string of signs may therefore represent e.g. /za(n)tadi/, /za(n)tali/, /za(n)tala/ and several others.

As no meaning can be assigned on the basis of its attestation, it is possible, but not at all provable that the word is cognate to the CLuw. verb zantalanu(wa)- ‘to diminish, belittle’ (CLL:278).

1.1.4Meaning

Most likely a noun, this word occurs in CEKKE inscr. 2, §8 in a clause that is difficult to interpret, as already noted by Hawkins & Morpurgo Davies 1982a:96. It takes sentence-initial position and is likely followed by the postposition /anni/ ‘at, for, from’: za-CRUS+RA/I-pa-wa/i INFRA?!- 1 “ARGENTUM”-ri+i 3 (SCALPRUM)ma-na-zi ARGENTUM-za Iwa/i+ra/i-pa-tá-sa-za INFANS.NÍ-WA/I-za DARE-mi-na, which may mean something like ‘From one ingot, three minas of silver are to be given to Warpanta’s sons for zantali-’ vel sim. (cf. Hawkins 2000a:145, 148), provided that the morphological analysis of the form as a dat./loc. sg. is actually correct. The context does little to elucidate the meaning of /za(n)tal(l)i-?/. If the interpretation should indeed be /zantali/ and it were related to CLuw. zantalanu(wa)- ‘to diminish, belittle’ (cf. CLL:278), it could denote a negative condition such as ‘belittlement’ vel sim., and the payment in silver could be compensatory. However, until further evidence surfaces, this hypothesis remains speculative.
