1.1.4Meaning
The parallelism of the clauses ḫar-ga-an-na-at
za-an-ta-la-nu-na-ia le-e tar-na-i “Let them (i.e. the descendants, lit. sg.) not allow to ruin or z. it (i.e. the kingship)” (Bo 86/299 ii 71) and na-an ḫar-ga-an-na te-ep-nu-um-ma-an-zi-ia le-e tar-na-i “Let them not allow to ruin or diminish him (i.e. Kurunta).” (ibid. 77) was already recognized by Otten 1988a:18, 50, 75 in his principal edition. Accordingly, he assigned the meaning ‘mindern, vermindern’ (followed in Starke 1990a:533, CLL:278, Giorgieri 1995a:311, Goedegebuure 2010a:311f., Tischler 2008a:205, Ünal 2007a:815, HEG W-Z:656f.).

1.1.5Stem
As pointed out by Goedegebuure 2010a:311f., zantalanuwa-(i) is a factitive -nu- verb derived from the unattested adjective *zantala/i- (still skeptical Melchert in CLL:278), which in turn is built from the adverb zanta ‘down’ by means of an -l- suffix. While Starke 1990a:533, when dealing with its word formation, opts for the suffix -alla/i-, Goedegebuure favors -la/i- (now followed by Melchert 2014d:209).

1.1.6Origin
The Luwian root, the use of gloss wedges and the Luwian ending -una leave no doubt regarding the Luwian origin of the word.
