eλf
‘(unknown)’1.1.1Transmission
This lexeme is found in a metrical inscription from Sardis, which cannot be dated with any accuracy.
[D.S.]
1.1.2Forms
| nom. sg. | eλf(s) | LW 14.2 (Sardis) |
The word eλf is followed by the enclitic particle =k ‘and’. This particle causes a preceding -s, -n, -d and -t (Gusmani 1964a:34) to drop (likewise -a, e.g. laqriš(a)=k in LW 8.2 and occasionally -š, though irregularly). Since eλf=k is coordinated with the subject of the sentence, the letter (s) is tentatively restored.

1.1.3Graphic Features
Gusmani 1964a:102 mentions the possibility that eλfk[…]λ̣ak could be a single word, but this is not likely, especially since the consonant sequence -λfk- is unparalleled in the Lydian corpus.
[D.S.]
1.1.4Meaning
The context, in which the word eλf is found, is fragmentary, although it is coordinated with the noun šawtaars ‘protector’, which implies that eλf- should designate a person or a deity. No meaning can be offered; cf. Gusmani 1964a:101f.
