1.1.3Meaning
In the Lycian B poem in honor of Gergis, the zrẽtẽne/i- represents a divine being from the city of Kaunos, which resents the king for his military activities (Eichner 1993a:143 n. 122). Melchert (DLL:138) compares the Lydian title šarẽta- ‘protector’ and assigns the same semantics to the Lycian noun (likewise Shevoroshkin 2002b:168; The comparison with Lydian is also kept by Schürr 2016d:176). Thus, the xbidewñni … zrẽtẽni can be translated as ‘the (divine) protector of Kaunos’ (= Apollo/Natri) (cf. Schürr 1998a:157f., DLL:135). For an overview of outdated hypotheses see Neumann 2007a:438.
