†zuwann(i)-
‘(ghost word)’1.1.1Transmission
The attestations of (-)zuwannīš are found in two NS duplicates texts from the Kuwattalla tradition.

1.1.2Forms
| nom. sg. | ]x(-)zu(over eras.?)-ú-wa-ni-i-iš | KUB 35.28 i 7’ | (CTH 761, NS) |
| (-)zu-w]a-a-an-ni-iš | KUB 35.29 i 5’ | (CTH 761, NS) |
1.1.3Graphic Features
The reading of -zu- over erasure in KUB 35.28 i 7’ can be confirmed by collation of the photograph, and its probability is further enhanced by the following -ú-. However, it is more likely than not that traces of a sign immediately before -zu- exist. As a consequence, there is no lemma zuwan(n)īš (contra Yakubovich, pers. comm.).
[E.R.]
1.1.4Meaning
Yakubovich’s (pers. comm.) assignment of the meaning ‘dog’ to this highly doubtful lexeme is based on etymological considerations (< PIE *k̑u̯on-). However, even linguistic arguments speak against the identification with the reflex of the PIE ‘dog’ word, since one does not expect geminate nn after PIE *o, but the corresponding singleton; see under HLuw. /zuwan(i)-/ ‘dog’ and its derivatives.

1.1.5Stem
Whatever the beginning of the word may be, the plene writing of -i- in the ending shows that it is probably an -i(ya)- derivative of a stem in -ann(i)-.
