1.1.4Meaning
Watkins 1978a:309f. suggests an etymological connection with Hitt. weḫ-/waḫ-(mi) ‘to turn, move’ (hesitant Carruba 1972a:44 n. 15). He analyzes the stem of Pal. waḫariya- as a denominative verb in -iya-, derived from an r-stem *waḫar- ‘turning’. For this type of formation he compares Hitt. pang-ar-iye/a- ‘to become numerous’, naḫš-ar-iya- ‘to be afraid’. This can be further supported by the textual interpretation involving p/wašḫullatiyaš, which would support the meaning ´to move about, to go to and fro´ for waḫariya-. These semantics of ´moving about´ are also found in the Hittite cognate weḫ-/waḫ-(mi). For a contextual analysis of the passage, see also recently Sasseville 2019a:23f. Carruba 1970a:77 (and Carruba 1972a:44) compares Pal. waḫariya- to Hitt. wakkariye/a- ‘to revolt against’, which is not supported by the phonology and, thus, is rightly rejected by Watkins ibid.
