1.1 Lydian
išt(i)-
‘(unknown)’1.1.1Transmission
This lexeme is found in a metrical inscription from Sardis and on a marble slab from Tire that cannot be dated accurately. However, due to the different s-spellings of the two forms, it is not absolutely certain that they belong to the same lexeme.
[D.S.]
1.1.2Forms
| dat./gen. pl. | ištaν | LW 14.7 (Sardis) | |
| adv. | istc̣ν | LW 47.2 (Middle Kaystros) |
Formally, the word ištaν could also be an accusative singular. However, the syntax of the sentence does not support this interpretation, because the neuter noun ciraλad is already the direct object (contra Brandenstein 1931b:40).

1.1.3Graphic Features
Buckler 1924a:65 points out that the readings of the damaged signs are very uncertain (thus also Gusmani 1964a:266) and that a new collation of the inscription is necessary. Gusmani 1964a:134, 266 does not separate the word sequence inṭistc̣ν in LW 47.2, but in the present analysis, they are separated into int ‘he makes’ and istcν ‘?’.

1.1.4Meaning
The contexts, in which the words ištaν and istcν are found, are obscure. No meaning can be offered; cf. Gusmani 1964a:217.
[D.S.]
1.1.5Stem
The stem of the lexeme is not assured, though its dative-genitive plural ending speak for a barytone noun. We tentatively assign a mutated stem, i.e. išt(i)-.
[D.S.]
1.1.6Origin
No etymology possible; cf. the Lydian preposition Lyd. išt.
