Attested in Luwian rituals (NS).

1.1.2Forms

dat.-loc. pl. aš-tu-um-ma-an-ta-an-za KUB 9.31 ii 25 (CTH 757, NS)
  a-aš-du-um-ma-an-ta-an-za KBo 29.31 iv 5’ (CTH 756, NS)

Attestations following CLL:38 and Laroche 1959a:34 checked against the photo of Konkordanz in case of KBo 29.31 iv 5’ (but no photo is available there on this part of KUB 9.31). CLL:38 classifies this word as a plurale tantum (implied also by the translation of Görke 2015a:§18), but many scholars do not share this view, who all translate it in plural, i.e. ‘gates’ (Morpurgo Davies 1987a:218; Yakubovich 2010d:143; Brosch 2014b:348; Giusfredi 2014a:309; Woudhuizen 2016-2017a:331; Hajnal & Zipser 2017b:333). Nevertheless, it is clear from the general context of KUB 9.31 ii 25, the ritual of Zarpiya, that the ritual acts are performed at one specific gate (esp. §16, when the ritualist enters the gate complex and performs there the Luwian spell containing this word), thus the correct translation is singular, despite the formal plurality. Accordingly, this is indeed a plurale tantum (which might originate in a collective meaning, e.g. ‘gate complex’).

1.1.3Meaning ‘gate’

Based on its determinative and broader context (the ritual of Zarpiya, esp. §16, cf. under Forms) there is a general agreement that this word means ‘gate’ (cf. under Forms, add also CLL:38; Tischler 2008a:31; Görke 2015a:§18; similarly Tischler 2016a:40 [‘porte, porte-cochère (?)’]; no or outdated translation in the earlier literature [Otten 1953a:49; Meriggi 1957a:218 n. 66; Laroche 1959a:34; Carruba 1968a:17; Ünal 2016a:953 and Schwartz 1938b:341, resp.]). The additional meaning ‘gateway’ proposed by CLL:38 (also in Tischler 2008a:31, but with question mark) is not probable, because the ritualist in §16 enters in the building of the gate (n=aš=kan ANAanda tiazi and KÁ does not mean ‘gateway’, cf. Weeden 2011b:524), cf. also under Forms.

2. Reconstruction

2.1Reconstruction

The Luwian word āštummant- is analyzed as a compound consisting of the word āšš- ´mouth´ and tummant- ´ear´ translated literally as ´mouth-like aperture´ (CLL:38, Melchert 2007-2008a:186, Melchert 2010b:56). Contra Meriggi 1957a:222, who assumed a loanword from Hurrian and a completely different meaning.

[D.S.]

For the first member of the compound see Luw. āšš-.
