acc. pl. c. /zidiyinzi/ VIR-ti-i-zi-i MARAŞ 4, §13 (Maraş)

1.1.3Meaning

The word -ti-i-zi-i agrees in number, gender and case with (“PES”)pa-ti-zi ‘feet’ and both are the direct objects of the verb kwa/i+ra/i- ‘to cut’. Meriggi 1951a:49 takes -ti-i-zi-i as a substantive and assumes a double accusative construction with (“PES”)pa-ti-zi (likewise Melchert 2011b:84). Hawkins 1980a:143 opens the possibility of having a genitival relation between the two accusatives, i.e. ‘feet of the men’ (thus also Hawkins 2000a:257, Yakubovich 2006a:80). Yakubovich (pers. comm.) suggests an adjective in -i(ya)- derived from /zid(i)-/ ‘man’, i.e. /zidi(ya)-/. Both interpretations are syntactically possible, but for an additional argument in favor of the latter one, see under Graphic features.

  ˹LÚ˺[MEŠ-zi] KUB 35.86 ii 3’ (CTH 766, NS)

Attestations following CLL:284 checked against the photographs of the Konkordanz. Restoration in KUB 35.86 ii 3’ follows Starke 1985b:265 based on the parallelism of the previous line.

1.2.3Meaning ‘male’

CLL:284 translates it as ‘man’, but this word always appears in the phrase DINGIR LÚMEŠ-zi, which means ‘male gods’ (Tischler 2008a:243, Tischler 2016a:475). Hence it is to be interpreted as an adjective meaning ‘male’.

2. Reconstruction

2.1Reconstruction ‘pertaining to the man’

HLuw. -ti-i- /zidi(ya)-/ and CLuw. - (adjective) can be equated, which would imply hypothetically that CLuw. - stands for /zidi(ya)-/. Thus, we can reconstruct a Proto-Luwian relational adjective in *-i̯o-, i.e. /zidi(ya)-/ < *k̑ī́di̯o- (+ *-i̯o-) ‘pertaining to the man’.
