doppelter Glossenkeilarriyal(i)-

‘(unknown)’

1.1.1Transmission

The gloss wedge-marked word occurs presumable three times in a cult inventory and once in a small NS fragment of a land donation.

nom. sg. c. doppelter Glossenkeilar-ri-ia-liš KUB 57.18 iii 18’ (CTH 527, NS)
unknown doppelter Glossenkeilar-ri-⸢ia⸣(-)[ KUB 51.23 ii 21’ (CTH 527, NS)
  doppelter Glossenkeila[r- KUB 51.23 iii 4 (CTH 527, NS)
  doppelter Glossenkeilar-ri-ia-l[a? KUB 48.83, 8’ (CTH 225, NS)

Due to the fragmentary status of the attestation at KUB 48.83, 8’, its assignment to the lemma remains uncertain. – Even doppelter Glossenkeila[r- at KUB 51.23 iii 4 in the same text is an uncertain candidate in view of preceding UDU ‘sheep’, which rather points to the epithet of a sheep, see CLuw. arrazza-.

1.1.4Meaning

The term remains untranslated in the editions (HW 2nd ed. A:197, Hazenbos 2003a:105, Cammarosano 2021a:157), because the fragmentary attestation does not permit a semantic interpretation. Also, a connection with the word family of CLuw. āriya-(ti) ‘to carry’ can be excluded on account of the geminate spelling of -rr-. The same applies, for the same reasons, to the connection suggested by Cammarosano 2021a:157 with Hurr. a-(a)-ri-(ia), which is presumably based on the incomplete reading doppelter Glossenkeilarriya(-) ending like a Hurrian essive form. Even the alleged collocation with KU]Š?A-RI-TAM(?) ‘shield’ (KUB 57.18 iii 18’ + KUB 51.23 iii 1’) is of no help, since the assumed reading is highly unlikely (instead probably: ]x-⸢a-ri-wa-an⸣-x[).

[E.R.]

1.1.5Stem

If all attestations listed under Forms belong here, the word falls into the class of i-mutated stems. The suffixes -alla/i-, -al(i)-, and -ali(ya)- represent the options for a future morphological analysis.

1.1.6Origin

If the conclusions drawn under Stem and Meaning are correct, the lexeme is Luwian.
