1.1.3.13.1 Phonological Interpretation

The plene writing of -i- in the denominal derivative la-li-i-na-i-me-iš in KUB 42.78 iii! 21’ is most likely to be interpreted as a contraction of *-iya-. The absence of a plene writing of the -a- in the forms of lalini- differs from the Luwian noun lāl(i)- c. ‘tongue’ (e.g., acc. sg. la-a-li-in KUB 25.37 ii 38). However, the sheer length of the adjective favors defective spellings as well as a shift of the accent. Therefore, the lack of plene -a- does not exclude the connection proposed under Meaning.

1.1.4Meaning

The current dictionaries give no meaning for lalin(n)aima/i-, if they consider the lemma at all, cf. DLL:62, CHD L-N:27, HEG L:24, CLL:123, Ünal 2007a:393, HHw:101, DCL:131. In KUB 42.78 iii! 21’, the lexeme modifies the genitival adjective kalup(p)ašša/i- (deriving kalup(p)a- ‘undergarment, vest’), which seems to be substantivized and denote a kind of fastener as an accessory to the kalup(p)a-garment (Burgin 2022a:334f.). Based on the phonetic similarity with the Anatolian lexeme *lala- ‘tongue’, Burgin 2022a:342 proposes ‘tonguelet (?)’ as a translation for doppelter Glossenkeillalin(i)-. Since all these lexemes are attested in fragmentary context, this can only be a speculative approximation for lalin(n)aima/i- ‘set/endowed with a lalin(i)-’.

1.1.5Stem

The lexeme lalin(n)aima/i- can well be explained as a denominative adjective stem in ‑aimma/i‑ derived from a Luwian noun lalin(i)-, cf. Burgin 2022a:342 and Yakubovich & Rieken 2026a:196. A similar explanation had been given by DLL:62, CHD L-N:28, Siegelová 1986a:605, and Starke 1990a:208, who assume the participial form (historically underlying the homonymous denominative adjectives).

[E.R.]

1.1.6Origin

The Luwian origin can be ascertained by the Luwian character of the base noun lalin(i)- ‘tonguelet (?)’ as well as the Luwian suffix -aimma/i‑  and the nom. pl. ending -enzi, cf. Melchert 2005a:8 and van den Hout 2006a:242. A Luwian origin is also accepted by DLL:62, CHD L-N:27f., HEG L-N:24, CLL:123, Ünal 2007a:393, HHw:101, DCL:131.
