1.1.2Forms
| stem form | la-li-ni | KUB 42.64 rev. 6’ | (CTH 241, NS) |
| KUB 42.84 obv. 6’ | (CTH 243, NS) |
Commonly, the attestation in KUB 42.84 obv. 6 is assigned to lalin(n)aima/i- ‘set/endowed with a lalini-’ (as
la-li-[ ]), cf. CHD L-N:27f., HEG L-M:24, CLL:123, DCL:131, contra Siegelová 1986a:605, who already correctly read and analyzed both attestations. For a recent assignment of
la-li-[ni] to lalini- n. ‘tonguelet (?)’, see Burgin 2022a:342, 446.
[E.R.]
1.1.3Meaning
The attestations in inventory texts show that
lalini- represents an object. It appears in the context of kalup(p)ašša/i- in both instances, which Burgin 2022a:342 interprets as a kind of fastener of the kalup(p)a- garment. He proposes lalini- to be a component of the kalup(p)ašša/i-fastener, named after lāl(i)- c. ‘tongue’ because of its specific shape.
[E.R.]
1.1.4Stem
Since the alleged -i(t)- stem lalini(t)- based on Starke´s 1982b:362 former reading la-li-ni-[š]a? in KUB 42.64 rev. 6’ (see under Graphic Features) does not find support by the denominal form lalinaima/i- (instead of expected **lalinitaimma/i-, see Burgin 2022a:342), an interpretation of the base as an i-mutated stem has a higher probability. In line with this assumption, lalin(i)- would reflect an underlying phonological pattern /lalinn(i)-/ and go back to syncopated *lala-i(ya)-ann(i)-, i.e. the Proto-Anatolian stem *lala- c. ‘tongue’, suffixed with -i(ya)- (> -ī-) in order to derive a relational adjective *lali(ya)-, and a further derivation with -ann(i)-, a Luwian suffix to build diminutives and appurtenance nouns (cf. Rieken & Yakubovich 2026a:207 and Rieken forthcoming). Cf. also the derivative lalin(n)aima/i- ‘set/endowed with a lalin(i)-’, which features the graphic alternation of -n- and -nn- and thus shows the discrepancy between the spelling and the standard form of the suffix -ann(i)-.

1.1.6Origin
The Luwian origin of the noun lalīn(i)- ‘tonguelet (?)’ derived with the Luwian suffixes -i(ya)- and -ann(i)- is additionally ascertained by the attestation with gloss wedge mark in KUB 42.84 obv. 6; cf. Melchert 2005a:8. The Luwian origin of the noun – regardless of the root approach – is already accepted by Siegelová 1986a:605, Starke 1982b:362, Starke 1990a:208, and HHw:101, while CHD L-N:28, Melchert 1993g:123, Ünal 2007a:393, and DCL:131 – only referring to the attestation la-li-ni without gloss wedge – take no position regarding this question.
