Checked against the photographs in the Mainzer Fotoarchiv, except for RS 25.421 obv. 24’. For the vacillation between -u- and -uwa-, see Melchert 2003b:183 and Yakubovich 2015b, § 5.2.1.

1.1.4Meaning

Güterbock’s (Güterbock 1956a:129) semantic interpretation of ḫu(wa)ḫḫu(wa)rtalla- as ‘necklace’ is based on the connection with UZUḫu(wa)ḫḫu(wa)rt(i)- in Hittite transmission and CLuw. UZUḫu(waḫ)ḫurt(i)- as well as on the context of KUB 15.23 obv. 15 (votive text), in which a “wreath of gold (as?/and) a Glossenkeilḫu-wa-aḫ-ḫu-wa-ar-ta-al-[la]” is promised to the deity. Laroche 1968a:773, 777 adduces further evidence from the trilingual RS 25.421 obv. 24, which permits the equation with Sum. [níĝ]-zi-ĝál and Akk. šurḫullu (= šerḫullu) ‘a gold or silver bead, a necklace, a metal object’. Laroche chooses ‘pendentif’, but ‘necklace’ is easier to square with the contexts in the inventory and votive texts (see HW 2nd ed. Ḫ:644f., most recently Burgin 2022a:326f.).Different Erkut 1987a: ‘Rohr’.

1.1.5Stem

Derived from ḫu(wa)ḫḫu(wa)art(i)- ‘throat, windpipe’, the lexeme represents a substantivized formation with the adjectival appurtenance suffix -alla/i-: ‘related to the throat/windpipe’; cf. Güterbock 1956a:129, van Brock 1962a:110, Laroche 1968a:777, HED H:418f., Burgin 2022a:326f., DCL:s.v. (contra Kronasser 1966a:172 with -la- to form nomina actoris, followed in Erkut 1997a:112f., HW 2nd ed. Ḫ:645).

[E.R.]

1.1.6Origin

The use of the gloss wedge, the Luwian suffix -alla/i-, and the partial reduplication (ḫu(wa)-) as opposed to the fuller reduplication syllable ḫur- (in Hitt. UZUḫurḫurta-) point to a borrowing from Luwian into Hittite, which is assumed or at least considered in Güterbock 1956a:129, DLL:49, van Brock 1962a:110, HW:331, HEG A-K:263, CLL:71, van den Hout 2006a:246, DCL:s.v.
