1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation
Out of the possible readings of the sign ḪAR, early Hittitologists opted for -ḫar-, until Rosenkranz 1964a:245 argued for -ḫur- on account of the -u- vowel in the reduplication syllable ḫu-. – For the vacillation between -u- and -uwa-, see Melchert 2003b:183 and Yakubovich 2015b, § 5.2.1; Neu 1974a:44 and Rieken 2001a:372 argue for -uwa- to be secondary; skeptical Melchert (DCL:s.v.).
[E.R.]
1.1.4Meaning
Shortly after the publication of KUB 35, Güterbock 1956a:129 remarked on the phonological similarity between CLuw. UZUḫuḫarta-[ and Hitt. UZUḫu(wa)ḫḫarti- (thus the linguistic assignment and the readings at the time, see under Phonological Interpretation). The translation of the latter as ‘throat, gorge’ (since Sayce 1927a:124 and Friedrich 1955a:46; see HW 2nd ed. Ḫ:643f. for further references and contexts) was also adopted for the Luwian word, which is mentioned after the body parts head, eyes, ears and mouth at KUB 35.88 iii 15f. Further support comes from the meaning ‘necklace’ of the substantivized adjectival derivative ḫu(wa)ḫḫu(wa)rtalla- (from ‘belonging to the throat’) attested in Hittite transmission (see under Derivatives). The translation is generally accepted in the handbooks; cf. HW:71,DCL:46, HEG A-K:263, CLL:71, HHw:51, 397, HED H:418f., Yakubovich & Mouton 2023b:406, HW 2nd ed. Ḫ:643f., DCL:s.v.; similarly, Alp 1957a:15 (followed by Erkut 1987a) suggests ‘windpipe’.
[E.R.]
1.1.5Stem
Synchronically, the lexeme belongs to the common gender nouns with i-mutation. It shows partial reduplication, a frequent feature in words for body parts (cf. Rosenkranz 1964a:245, HEG A-K:263, Hutter 1988a:98, HED H:418f., Oettinger 2016b:276f., implicitly DCL:s.v.). Most likely, the root of UZUḫu(waḫ)ḫurt(i)- is ḫurt- (unless a suffix -t(i)- would have to be assumed).

1.2.3Graphic Features
Checked against the photographs in the Mainzer Fotoarchiv. – The restoration [UZUḫu-uḫ-ḫ]u-ur-ti-i=š-š[i] at Bo 5876 ii 3’ differs from the one cited in HW 2nd ed. Ḫ:643, since it is assumed here that only the genuinely Hittite form shows the fuller reduplication with ḫur-; cf. under Hittite.
[E.R.]
1.2.4Meaning
See under CLuw. ḫu(waḫ)ḫurt(i)- above.
[E.R.]
1.2.5Stem
All forms with partial reduplication ḫu(wa)- in Hittite transmission are compatible with a borrowed i-stem, but an a-stem for the oblique case form cannot be excluded. For the unambiguous a-stem forms, see under Hittite.
[E.R.]
1.2.6Origin
The assumption of a Luwian origin (thus DCL:s.v.; undecided CLL:71) is based on the use of the identical word in Cuneiform Luwian and the derivative ḫu(wa)ḫḫu(wa)rtalla- with gloss wedges and the Luwian -alla/i- suffix.

1.3 Hittite
ḫurḫurta-
‘throat’1.3.1Literature / Comments
The a-stem forms as cited in HW 2nd ed. Ḫ:643 with the fuller reduplication syllable ḫur- possibly represent the genuinely Hittite stem (see DCL:s.v. with reference to the unpublished M.A. thesis by Elisabeth Rieken, 1991).
