1.1.4Meaning
No meaning of the word is offered in DLL:48, CLL:74, HHw:54, DCL:s.v. Its adjectival character is evident from the final suffix -i(ya)- and its use as an attribute of ḫaršanza ‘bread-loaf’. The preceding suffix, or rather suffix combination -iyat(i)-, known from other derivatives such as HLuw. *zitiyati(ya)- ‘masculine’ and ḫupparattiyat(i)- ‘pelvis’ (see Melchert CLL:74 and DCL:s.v.), is attached to the base *ḫupalz-. Phonologically, it can be surmised that *ḫupalz- in ḫupalziyati(ya)- goes back to *ḫupalš- (with *-ls- > -lz- [lts]) and continues the same base as ḫupallaš- ‘skull’ in Hittite transmission, but due to the length of the derivative shows the loss of the anaptyctic vowel in the final syllable of ḫupallaš-, which leads to the epenthesis. If correct, this permits more than an educated guess regarding the meaning of ḫupalziyati(ya)-, following its likely derivational path: ḫupallaš- > (+ syncope) *ḫupalz- ‘skull’ → *ḫupalziyat(i)- ‘skull-like shape’ → ḫupalziyati(ya)- ‘being of a skull-like shape, skull-shaped’, which would be an appropriate epithet for a bread-loaf.
