1.1 Luwian in Hittite transmission
lēlari-(ti)
‘to pacify, soothe’1.1.1Transmission
The base verb is attested only once in a NS oracle report, whereas the -ške/a- imperfective occurs five times from OH/MS texts (ritual and myths) onwards (for more attestations, see CHD L-N:59).

1.1.2Forms
| 3pl. pres. act. | [l]e-e-la-ri-in-ti | KBo 53.102, 10’’ | (CTH 579, NS) |

1.1.3Graphic Features
Checked against the photographs in the Mainzer Fotoarchiv. – The restoration of the first sign in [l]e-e-la-ri-in-ti, first proposed in Soysal 2009a:301, is supported by the occurrence of le-e-la-aš in the next line (ibid. 11’’).

1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation
Puhvel (HED L:79) tries to explain the -r- in the verbal suffix as a “parasitic -r- in the hiatic slot of y” and compares sporadic arimpa- besides aimpa- ‘burden’. However, the frequency of the phenomenon in this word in contrast with its absence in all other -a(i)- derivative compromises that approach.

1.1.4Meaning
Following Güterbock 1968a:68 with n. 12, lilāreške/a-(mi) can be assigned the same meaning as the shorter -ške/a- verb lile/iške/a-(mi) and its base verb lilā(i)-(mi) (see CHD L-N:59 for the significant contexts; cf. also HEG L-N:57, HED L:79, HHw:94, Ünal 2007a:402). Only in 2005, an attestation of base verb of lilāreške/a-(mi) was published, viz. the Luwianism lilarinti with the Luwian 3pl. pres. act. ending -inti. The relevant fragment is very small but contains enough lexical material to show that is an incantation for the soothing of the soul of the deity by sympathetic magic.

1.1.5Stem
For the e vocalism of the reduplication syllable, see under līla-(ti) ‘to pacify, soothe’. A plausible analysis of the stem formation of lilāreške/a-(mi) was suggested by Kronasser 1962-1966:508 and hesitantly supported by Oettinger 1979a:351f. They considered the verb to be the ‑ške/a- formation of a denominative verb in -ariye/a-(mi), with the suffix -ariye/a- being abstracted from -iye/a-(mi) denominatives of nouns in -(C)ro- (now known to develop into -(C)ar-). A parallel suffix -ari-(ti) is also found in Luwian (e.g. ḫattari-(ti)).For unknown reasons, CHD L-N:59 and EDHIL:524 regard the stem formation as unclear. The only special feature of lilāriške/a-(mi) and lēlari-(ti) lies in the fact that it was derived from a synchronic -a- stem, which probably led to -ā- in first suffix syllable (spelled with plene -a-).

1.1.6Origin
Melchert (DCL:s.v.) is the only scholar who explicitly deems Luwian the most likely origin of lēlari-(ti) and the inner-Hittite derivative lilāriške/a-(mi) (in fact of the entire word family). Although the early attestation of lilāriške/a-(mi) (OH/MS) makes Melchert’s borrowing scenario less likely, it does not exclude it. If līla- were of Proto-Anatolian age, one would expect *li-lh1-o- to develop into **lilla- with assimilation of the laryngeal. Therefore, lēlari-(ti) is regarded here as a Luwianism, with a Hittitization regarding the vocalism e of the reduplicative formant (for the latter, see under līla-(ti)).
