1.1.2Forms

nom. sg. [ḫ]u?-⸢i⸣-pa-at-ta-a[š] KBo 34.49 ii! 6’ (CTH 456, NS)
  ⸢ḫu-i⸣-pa-at-ta-a[š] KBo 54.36 ii 7’ (CTH 470, NS)
acc. sg. ḫu-i-pa-at-ta-a[n] ABoT 2.40, 3’ (CTH 456, NS)
dat./loc. sg. ḫu-i-pa-⸢at-ti⸣ KUB 36.83 i 18 (CTH 456, NS)

HW 2nd ed. Ḫ:654 considers the restoration ḫu-i-pí-i[a-at-ta-an] at KBo 23.57 iv 16’, but this would yield yet another stem variant and is, therefore, rejected here (see under ḫuipi(ya)-). – The restoration as nom. sg. []u?-i⸣-pa-at-ta-a[š] at KBo 34.49 ii! 6’ follows Fuscagni 2014d, in analogy with [ḫu-u]l-la-an-za-i[š] ibid. ii! 5’.

1.1.3Graphic Features

Checked against the photographs in the Mainzer Fotoarchiv. – Erroneous reading huipalata- (KUB 36.83 i 18) by Ünal 2007a:221 and huipayata- by HED H:360. – HW 2nd ed. Ḫ:654 restores ]u-i-pa-at-ta-a[z at KBo 34.49 ii! 6’.

1.1.4Meaning

The authors acknowledging the stem ḫuipatta- regard it explicitly or implicitly as a variant of ḫuipayata- ‘cruelty, ruthlessness’ (HHw:52, Melchert 2005a:449, Fuscagni 2014d, HW 2nd ed. Ḫ:654) and translate it accordingly, even Melchert 2022a:200 (CLL:82 and DCL:s.v.), who first recognized that the two words were derived from different bases (see under Stem).

[E.R.]

1.1.5Stem

In Hittite, the stem seems to have been transferred to the Hittite common gender a-stems (if the restoration of the nom. sg. endings is correct; see under Forms), when borrowed from the assumed Luwian neuter -tt(a)- stem. The base of this abstract noun can be found in the factitive verb ḫuipa-(ti) ‘to do evil to’, following Melchert (DCL:s.v.).

1.1.6Origin

For the origin of the word family, see under ḫuipayata- and the lemma head.

[E.R.]

For the lemma head see CLuw. ḫuip(i)-.
