marawalli(ya)-

‘corn-field (?)’

1.1.1Transmission

This word is only attested a MS itinerary (a sort of cadastral text, cf. Cammarosano 2018a:79f.) written by the scribe maškaliya (cf. Francia 2019a:224) describing the way to the town of Šāššūna (cf. Lorenz & Rieken 2007a).

1.1.2Forms

nom./acc. pl. n. (or nom. sg. c. (?)) ma-ra-wa-al-⸢li⸣-ia-a(=) KBo 62.5, 9 (CTH 230, MS)

The attestation follows Ünal 2007a:429, Ünal 2016a:339 (not yet included in Laroche 1959a or CLL). The transliteration the transliteration is based on the hand copies of KBo 62.5 and Wilhelm 2005a:79 (no photograph was available).

Tischler 2008a:112 (cf. Tischler 2016a:211) assumes a form marawalliyašši- but according to Lorenz & Rieken 2007a:476 -(š)ši is the enclitic pronoun here.

1.1.3Meaning

The meaning of this word is unclear. It is usually assumed to be a topographical feature related to corn: Lorenz & Rieken 2007a:476f. “Kornfeld”, cf. Tischler 2008a:112 “mit einem Kornfeld ausgestattet (Heiligtum)”, Tischler 2016a:211 “pourvu d’un champ de céréales” (cf. Ünal 2007a:429, Ünal 2016a:339).

The context of KBo 62.5 shows the following, the transliteration is based on the hand copies of KBo 62.5 and Wilhelm 2005a:79 (no photograph was available), furthermore the transliterations of Wilhelm 2005a:78 and Lorenz & Rieken 2007a:467 as well as the translation and commentary of Lorenz & Rieken 2007a:468, 472–477 have been taken account of (see also walwaya-):

(6)si ⸢dàra⸣.maš ar-ma-ta-al-li-ia-an-za (7)wa-al-wa-ia-an-za -ru ši-i?-na-aḫ-tu-u-ra-aš (8)na4ḫu-wa-ši-ia-at-kán an-dur-za wa-al-ḫa-an-(eras)te-eš (9)na4pé-ru-né-eš ma-ra-wa-al-li-ia-aš-ši šag.du-

(6–7)buckhorn, a sickening, lion-like spring; a šinaḫtūra; (8–9)inside the ḫu-wa-ši (a stone sanctuary) there are chipped stones; a marawalli(ya)- (belonging) to it is above (or ahead?)

The description in this itinerary is full of rare lexemes. According to Lorenz & Rieken 2007a:476 the subject marawalli(ya)- (sg. or pl.) is syntactically connected to the ḫuwaši-sanctuary with the enclitic dat.-loc. pronoun -(š)ši. Regarding its meaning Lorenz & Rieken 2007a:476f. point out that there is no fitting Hittite or CLuwian word but a HLuwian word mara/i-wa/i-li-sá ‘corn-stem(s)’ (cf. under the respective lemma) can be connected. The topographic feature marawalli(ya)- would then be a substantivized adjective of appurtenance (cf. under Origin), for which Lorenz & Rieken 2007a:477 suggest a meaning ‘corn field’, which is possible but cannot be determined with certainty.

1.1.4Origin

Due to its late discovery this word was not yet included in the Luwian dictionaries (CLL and Laroche 1959a) or in the lists of Luwianisms of Melchert 2005a or van den Hout 2006a. Lorenz & Rieken 2007a:476f. assume a Luwian origin (also assumed by Ünal 2007a:429, cf. Ünal 2016a:339) due to the existence of the base of this word in HLuwian.

The stem formation of marawalli(ya)- includes the Luwian suffixes -alla/i- and -i(ya)- (both deriving adjectives from nouns, cf. Melchert 2003b:195, 197). A Luwian adjective *marawalla/i- ‘of corn’ is also the base of the HLuw. substantivized form /marawalla/i-/ ‘corn-stem(s)’ (cf. under the respective lemma).
