1.1.4Meaning

The semantic interpretation of tarpaššaḫi(t)- as ‘position of a ritual substitute’ by Starke 1990a:168 (followed in CLL:216, HHw:169, HEG T:212, Ünal 2007a:699, DCL:s.v.; Otten in the preface of KBo 15: ‘substitute’, followed in HW:476) is based entirely on its derivational relationship with its base tarpāššā- c. ‘substitute’, although the fragmentary context permits the conclusion that a woman is dressed for her role in the substitution ritual (KUŠe.sirMEŠ at 2’, 1 munus-tum at 3’). Starke reconstructs an intermediary denominative verb tarpaššai̯i-*. However, since the factitive verb tarpašša-(ti) is in fact attested, a more economical solution would posit the latter as the base of tarpaššaḫi(t)-.

1.1.5Stem

The abstract noun tarpaššaḫi(t)- can be based on tarpāššā- c. ‘(ritual) substitute’ or on the factitive verb tarpašša-(ti) (contra Starke 1990a:168; see also under Meaning).

[E.R.]

1.1.6Origin

The interpretation of the root and the derivational chain imply a Luwian borrowing (Starke 1990a:168, CLL:216, HHw:169, HEG T:212, DCL:s.v.).
