1.1.4Meaning
In the context of the deposition, the accused official pleads his innocence. Instead, he claims, the lost item was not properly packed. The relevant clauses run as follows: (9’)[nu-w]a-ra-at-kán ar-ḫa
tar-pa-ša-at-ta (10’)[d]a-aḫ-ḫu-un-ma-wa ú-ul ku-it-ki “[and] he t.-ed it away (alternatively: [and] it t.-ed away), but I did not take anything” (Werner 1967a:34f., without translation of the verb; cf. HW:333). After an early attempt by Güterbock 1956a:124 (followed by Josephson 1979a:183, and HHw:169: ‘it leaked, it fell out’), Starke 1990a:168 n. 556, 234 (followed by Jasanoff 2003a:132) included the meaning of the underlying verb – according to him tarp(a)i- ‘to replace, substitute’ – and suggested ‘to replace, substitute’ for its putative imperfective stem (see also HHw:169, HEG T:211, Ünal 2007a:699; less successful DLL:93). While Melchert (CLL:216, DCL:s.v.) accepted the semantic interpretation, he related the verb to tarpāššā- ‘(ritual) substitute’ and assumed a denominative stem. More precisely, Sasseville 2015a:291 narrowed the options down to a factitive stem in -a-(ti).

1.1.6Origin
In view of the use of the gloss wedges and the Luwian base and ending, the verb can safely be attributed to Luwian (DLL:93, Starke 1990a:168 n. 556, 234, CLL:216, Melchert 1994a:79, HHw:169, HEG T:211, Jasanoff 2003a:132, Melchert 2005a:452, DCL:s.v.).
