trbbẽ

‘(unknown)’

1.1.1Transmission

This lexeme is attested in the inscription of the inscribed pillar of Xanthos, dated contextually to shortly after the ascension of Artaxerxes II in 405-404 BCE and stylistically to around 400 BCE (Borchhardt & Eichner 1997-1999a:19f.).

1.1.2Forms

nom./acc. sg. n. or gen. pl. (?) trbbẽ TL 44a.23 (Xanthos)

Because of the partly preserved sentence, all grammatical interpretation remain uncertain; cf. Meriggi 1978c:247 “acc. sg.” (contra Meriggi, Lyc. B trbbdi does not belong to the same paradigm as trbbẽ, but is instead a verb with a different root; see under lemma).

1.1.3Graphic Features

Since trbbẽ begins a new line and the end of the last line is not preserved, it is possible that the word is incomplete, i.e. ]-trbbẽ.

1.1.4Meaning

The word occurs in a context pertaining to the construction of monuments surrounding the inscribed pillar of Xanthos (see Eichner 2005a:29). Eichner 2005a:29 n. 156 suggests that trbbẽ is an adverb meaning ‘however’, which is a mere hypothesis without any support. Nothing is suggested by Melchert (DLL:69) or Neumann 2007a:371, although an etymological relationship to trbbi ‘against’ and trbbele/i- ‘hostile’ is generally suspected. Gehrisch 2018a:62 seems to suggest that trbbẽ is a personal name and thus the subject of the sentence, which is not impossible but not supported in any way either. No additional suggestion is made here, but it is worth comparing Lyd. trfãν, see also Lyc. A trbẽtadra- under Compounds.
