1.1.4Meaning ‘related to vital force, feistiness, bellicosity’

The semantic interpretation rests on the transparent stem formation, i.e. tarp(i)- ‘force, feistiness, bellicosity’ plus -i(ya)- suffix for relational adjectives. The context confirms the result of the derivational analysis: ana kur.kur kúr=ma idalawaš ... tarpīn ḫuipin piški “Give ... cruelty related to bellicosity to the evil enemy lands!” (HW 2nd ed. Ḫ:654).

1.1.6Origin

For the Luwian origin of the base tarp(i)-, see under Lemma head. Accordingly, also the -i(ya)- derivative can be classified as Luwian.

For the lemma head see CLuw. tarp(i)-.
