tarpatarp(a)i-(di)

‘to (constantly) struggle, oppose (?)’

1.1.1Transmission

The lexeme is found once in a Middle Hittite ritual fragment from the Kuwattalla tradition. See HEG T:213f. with references, for the name of a plant, tarpatarpa- c., whose relationship with tarpatarp(a)i-(di) ‘to (constantly) struggle, oppose’ is possible, but semantically difficult and unprovable.

1.1.3Graphic Features

Checked against the photographs in the Mainzer Fotoarchiv. – The reading as suggested by Yakubovich & Mouton 2023a:234-237 is not entirely assured, but very likely in view of the attestation of a verbal noun tarpatarpatta- ibid. iv 7.

1.1.4Meaning

It can safely be assumed that the actions by the evil tongues in iv 1’-2’ are hostile towards the ritual patron, agreeing well with the meaning suggested for the related verbal noun tarpatarpatta- ‘constant struggle, opposition (?)’ (ibid. iv 7); cf. Yakubovich & Mouton 2023a:234-237.

1.1.5Stem

The stem formation is largely transparent, but it permits two analyses regarding the order of the derivational processes. First, a reduplicated nominal stem *tarpa-tarp(i)- was possibly derived as both a denominative verb in -(a)i-(di), i.e. tarpatarp(a)i-(di), and a stem in -(a)tta- c. (for the type see Sasseville 2021a:215; cf. especially the triad of šarla/i- ‘supreme’, /sarl(a)i-(di)/ ‘to exalt by praise’, and šarlatt(a)- n. ‘exaltation’). Secondly, the reduplication can have followed the suffixation in each case (implicitly DLL:93, CLL:216, DCL:s.v.).
