1.1.3.13.1 Phonological Interpretation
Even though the word is attested but once in the HLuw. corpus, its phonological interpretation can be deemed certain. It has a cognate in CLuw. pūwatil(i)- ‘past’ and related words, cf. Hawkins 1995a:41 and CLL:182.
[AH.B.]
1.1.4Meaning
Because of the cognate link with CLuw. pūwatil(i)- ‘past’, the meaning of the present lexeme is transparent. It fits the context at SÜDBURG, §10a, relating historical events: pu-wa/i-ti AVUS.HANA-na-z[i/a],The order of reading is not at all clear here, cf. the different order adopted by Hawkins 1995a:21. approx. /puwadi huhahannanzi/, perhaps translating as ‘Formerly, my ancestors, (they were successful nowhere)’.
[AH.B.]
1.1.5Stem
The word is assumed to be an indeclinable adverb, but may represent a lexicalised case form, most likely a dat./loc. sg. If that analysis should be correct, the underlying stem */puwad(i)-/ would be based on */puwa-/, cognate with CLuw. pūwa ‘formerly’.
[AH.B.]
