1.1.1Transmission

This lexeme is attested in the inscription of the inscribed pillar of Xanthos, dated contextually to shortly after the ascension of Artaxerxes II in 405-404 BCE and stylistically to around 400 BCE (Borchhardt & Eichner 1997-1999a:19f.).

1.1.3Meaning ‘donation, grant, offering’

The noun ubu, the direct object of hãtẽ ‘they issued, (lit.) released’, is modified by kbijẽti ‘two’ and refers to the two stelae mentioned immediately after. Melchert 1993e:33f. (but see DLL:75 for a more appropriate translation), Hajnal 1994a:146 and Yakubovich 2005a:249 translate it with ‘grant, offering’ (followed by Neumann 2007a:400, Schürr 2012a:119, Shevoroshkin 2014a:232 n. 1, Martínez Rodríguez 2018a:280, unclear Gehrisch 2018a:77f.).

The word uba- is an action noun in -a- (< *-eh2-) derived from the verb ube-(ti) ‘to donate’ (see Melchert 1993e:33f., Hajnal 1994a:146, Martínez Rodríguez 2018a:280).
