1.1.4Meaning

Based on the parallel lists of multiple merisms in the rituals of the Kuwattalla tradition, Laroche 1958b:192f. (thus superseding Otten 1953a:105, still followed in HW:329, 425) recognized the semantic match in šeš-yan nin-yan and nānieya nānašrie[ya]. His erroneous morphological analysis of the forms as nouns was much later corrected by Carruba 1982a:35-38 (followed by Melchert 1990a:199f.), who demonstrated that they represent relational adjectives in -i(ya)-. Meanwhile, the improved derivational interpretation entered the handbooks (cf. Starke 1990a:37, CLL:155, HED N:107, HHw:110, EDHIL:601, Steer 2015a:44, Yakubovich & Mouton 2023b:414; DCL:s.v.; for the earlier analysis, see DLL:73, HW:425).

1.1.6Derivatives

  1. The gloss wedge word doppelter Glossenkeilna-ni-ti at KBo 43.61 + KUB 22.40+ rev. iii 30 (see under Lemma) could be connected with *nān(i)- ‘brother’. In this case, it would represent a causative formation ‘to let (someone) act in a brotherly manner’ in the sense of ‘to appease’ (the latter meaning already being considered in CHD L-N:395) parallel to the collocated verb gangatiti ‘he treats/purifies with the gangati plant’.

*The forms in the table were checked together with Marian Wehrstein.

For the lemma head see CLuw. *nān(i)-.
