1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation

The phonological interpretation of this noun is provisional. On the one hand, the word is securely connected, not least by use of the logogram (sign *115), to the word family around /tabar-(ti)/ (or /tabari-(ti)/) ‘to rule’, which has cognates in CLuw. tapar-(ti) ‘to rule’ and its family as well as in Hittite tapariyā(i)-(mi) ‘to rule’. On the other hand, the sign 〈+ra/i〉 at KARKAMIŠ A14a, §4 may be interpreted as a phonetic indicator or syllabically, depending on the morphological structure of the word: in the case of /tabariyattan/, a reading as 〈LEPUS+RA/I-ta-na〉 would be required, whereas a form /tabar(it)tan/ would entail 〈LEPUS+ra/i-ta-na〉. Only additional finds can solve the matter.

1.1.4Meaning

Despite a single attestation, the meaning of this noun can be gauged at least in general terms, cf. Hawkins 2000a:86. For KARKAMIŠ A14a, §4 outlines the career of the author with: *349(-)ara/i-ma-ha-wa/i-mu LEPUS+RA/I-ta-na pi-ia-ta, approx. /…-arama/in=ha=wa=mu tabar(it)tan piyanta/, meaning ‘(They gave me my paternal greatness,) they gave me … authority’. Further data may result in a semantic fine-tuning of the translation.

1.1.5Stem

The noun is a common gender abstract noun in /-tta-/, deriving from the verb /tabar-(ti)/ or /tabari-(ti)/ ‘to rule’. Alternatively, it may derive from /tabariya-(ti)/ ‘to command’, possibly with subsequent contraction, cf. Yakubovich apud Valério 2015a:347 n. 77.
