1.1.3Graphic Features

Checked against the photograph in the Konkordanz (Mainzer Fotoarchiv). The possibility voiced by scholars that there was a Glossenkeil in the lacuna before the word should not be excluded.

1.1.4Meaning

Despite the fragmentary context, the word is translated with ‘authority’ by Miller 2013a:308f., and somewhat differently with Germ. ‘Herrschaft, Regierung’ by Starke 1990a:163. Tischler (HEG T, D:119) casts doubts on the semantic assignments due to the fragmentary state of the context. In any case, the meaning ‘authority’ obtained via the morphological and etymological analysis of the word is provisionally accepted here, although contextual confirmation is lacking.

1.1.5Stem

Starke 1990a:163 (followed by Melchert in DCL:s.v.) takes taparamaḫit- as an abstract formation in -aḫit- n., derived from the abstract noun taparamman-, which however does not exist (see under lemma head for the analysis as a participial form taparamma/i-). Instead, one may posit a derivational chain in -it- n. derived from the action noun in -a-ma- c. (from earlier -a-maḫ-), which would serve as one of the examples for the reinterpretation of the morphological chain -aḫ-it- into -aḫit-. On the other hand, if one assumes that the spelling is defective for *taparammaḫit-, then it would be preferable to take the form as an abstract formation in -aḫit- derived from the participial base taparamma/i- (likewise Güterbock 1956a:124), an overall more convincing derivational morphological chain.

1.1.6Origin

The Luwian origin of the lexeme is made clear by its suffix -aḫit- and the abl./instr. ending -ati (Güterbock 1956a:124, Laroche in DLL:91, Melchert 2005a:451, DCL:s.v.).
