1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation

The phonological form of this word is unknown. While *502 still awaits any kind of interpretation, occurring only once more in another Bronze Age inscription in another unclear word, *300 is well known as the logogram . However, the intention of its usage here is quite unclear.

1.1.4Meaning

The tentative interpretation as a verb denoting the act of being defeated is put forward by Yakubovich 2017e:s.v. While possible, the context at the beginning of the SÜDBURG inscription presents many challenges, one of which being the unclear clause boundaries, and the assigned meaning is therefore less than certain. What may be §1 or §2 runs: HATTUSA(REGIO) OMNIS2 kwa/i+ra/i ali-wa/i-ní á-INFRA.KA PLANTA mi-ta-na ma-sa5 lu-ka i(a)-ku-na *502.*300 MAGNUS.REX [FRO]NS?-za/i PRAE, approx. /Hattusas punadis kwari aliwanni anni… Mittana Masa Lukka Ikkuna … hantawatturanz hantilanz parran/, perhaps translating as ‘When all of Hatti (was) for the enemy, it was defeated(?) before former kings in …, Mittani, Masa, Lukka, Ikkuna’ (cf. Hawkins 1995a:22f.). The passage has, however, seen many alternative ways of interpretation.
