1.1.2Forms

nom./acc. pl. wa-aš-ku-wa-na KUB 21.19 iv 14’ (CTH 383, NS)

1.1.3Graphic Features

Checked against the photographs in the Mainzer Fotoarchiv. – The reading of [wa-aš-k]u-wa-na at KUB 50.6 iii 27 suggested by van den Hout 1998b:186, 228 (cited in HEG U-Z:400) is hardly possible given that the topmost horizontal of the sign hits the vertical mid-level (cf. the KU signs ibid. iii 19 and iii 22).

1.1.4Meaning

The context at KUB 21.19 iv 14’-16’ clearly points to a meaning similar to or identical with that of wašku(i)-, as submitted by Sürenhagen 1981a:98f. and Weitenberg 1984a:271: (14’)⸢nu? ma-a-an a-nadingirMEŠ pé-ra-an a-pé-e wa-aš-ku-wa-na (15’)e-eš-zi-pát ku-it-ki nu-u-wa nu-kán a-pé-e-da-ni (16’)ḫul-u-i ud-da-ni-i dingir-lim-iš ⸢ku⸣-iš-ki ú-e-ri-an-⸢za⸣ “and? if before the gods that failure somehow still persists and (if) in that evil affair some deity was called upon” (accepted in Ünal 2007a:794, HEG U-Z:400, Rieken et al. 2015-2017a).

[E.R.]

1.1.5Stem

The form in -na permits a classification as a stem in -an- or -a-na-. Since neuter stems in -an- are well-attested in Luwian (Starke 1990a:227-239), this alternative seems preferable (Ünal 2007a:794, HEG U-Z:400) and is adopted here with all due caution.

1.1.6Origin

For its Luwian origin, see Reconstruction under lemma head wašt(a)-.
