1.1.4Meaning
CLuw. wašku(wa)llimma/i- is generally interpreted as an adjective qualifying the preceding noun ḫārat(t)arša ‘offence’ (Starke 1990a:258 n. 880, CLL:265, EDHIL:983, HEG U-Z:400), but the word order points to a substantivization thereof, juxtaposed to a quasi-synonym (HHw:s.v.; undecided DLL:109). Semantically, either solution is more than compatible with what the transparent stem formation suggests. The lexical base of the word, viz. *waškuwa- ‘sin, offence’ forms an adjective *waškuwalla/i- ‘sinful, iniquitous, offensive’, from which a denominative verb *waškuwalli-(ti) ‘to act in a sinful/offensive way’ is derived. Accordingly, its participle, the attested wašku(wa)llimma/i-, means ‘done in a sinful/iniquitous way’ (thus Starke 1990a:258 n. 880, CLL:265, EDHIL:983, HEG U-Z:400) and its substantivization denotes ‘sinful/offensive deed’, i.e. ‘sin, iniquity, offence’ (HHw:s.v.; without translation of the derivative DLL:109).

If the synchronic categorization as a noun is correct, it belongs to the class of neuter thematic nouns in -(a)- (otherwise it would be a mutated adjective). For the derivational chain, see under Meaning.
