1.1.1Transmission

The only certain example of the lexeme occurs in a NS ritual fragment of the Tauriša tradition.

1.1.2Forms

nom./acc. sg. (?) GIŠta-la-a-an-za KBo 7.68 ii 3’ (CTH 764, NS)

For the interpretation as a nominative, see DCL:s.v. contra Pecchioli Daddi 2010a:198 “acc. pl. c.”.

The putative attestations of (-)t]al-la-an-zi= at KUB 35.110, 2’ and ]x-tal-la-i= at KUB 35.101 obv. 10? (to be read as [GI]Štal-la-i= ?) are incomplete, which makes their assignment to the present lemma less than certain (CLL:203, Pecchioli Daddi 2010a:198, DCL:s.v.). For GIŠta-la-a-an-za, Melchert (DCL:s.v.) postulates a scribal mistake by adding the sign AL, i.e. GIŠta-<al->la-a-an-za probably due to the other attestations showing a geminated -ll-. This is not followed here.

1.1.4Meaning

The lexeme occurs in a list of houshold items, probably in the nominative. Nothing supports or precludes the identity with Hitt./Luw. GIŠ/DUGtalla- (tallai-), a container used for perfume, for which see under lemma. However, on account of the different spelling (with singleton -l-) and the unexpected plene spelling of the stem vowel -a-, caution seems advised.

[E.R.]

1.1.5Stem

Based on the assumed neuter form in -an-za, the stem can presumably be identified as a neuter thematic noun in spite of the unusual length of the stem-final vowel (DCL:s.v.).
