1.1.3.1Phonological Interpretation

The phonological interpretation of this word is tentative because of the spelling variation it shows. The stem appears to alternate between /izziyadi-/ and /izzidi-/, and the expected stem in /-iya-/ appears to have been lost to syncope in both attestations in MALPINAR. Still, such contraction is not unexpected for an 8th century BCE text, cf. e.g. Melchert 2003a:183.

1.1.4Meaning

The meaning is assigned mainly on the basis of the cognate links of the word and its morphological structure (cf. Yakubovich 2017e and Yakubovich 2020a). Hawkins 2000a:342f. draws on the connection with /izzi(ya)-(di) ‘to do, make’ to suggest a meaning such as ‘performance’ vel sim., whereas Rieken 2007b:265 deems the contexts too fragmented for an interpretation. Both contexts of attestation in MALPINAR are broken, with §10 slightly better preserved: a-wa/i za-a i-zi-i-ia-t[i?-z]a? kwa/i-i-sa la+ra/i-x-ia, approx. /a=wa za izziyadin=za kwis laraya/, meaning ‘(He) who blesses this offering (to that one …)’ (cf. Hawkins 2000a:342).

[AH.B.]

1.1.5Stem

The noun is clearly a neuter gender, as proven by the presence of the neuter particle /=za/. Ultimately deriving from the verb /izzi(ya)-(di)/ ‘to do, make’, its word formation is unclear; cf. Yakubovich 2015b:6.2.
